These ducklings were trapped in a storm drain under Interstate 25. (where that is, I don't know)

Duck shot by arrow!!
An Arizonian mallard duck was found swimming with an arrow sticking out its feathers! Egads. Luckily the Yuma Fire Dept. came to the rescue, and the stuck duck is under the care of a local vet.
According to the vet, the young female duck was struck in the right armpit. The arrow exited via her left armpit (who knew ducks had armpits, right?) and punctured her poor little lungs and air sacs.
"I haven't actually seen an arrow sticking out of a bird that is still alive, ever," Dr. Cheryl Haugo told the Yuma Sun. She added that the arrow "just missed the really important stuff," such as the heart and spine.
Still, it wasn't all happy news--the duck sustained a broken wing and can no longer live in the wild. "She will never be able to fly again," Haugo said.
The as yet unnamed duck is currently in rehab at Haugo's home.

Ducks in Maine Have Their Own Waterparks
What's the flap all about? A mallard duck beats the water out of its wings after enjoying a dip in a pond in Portland, Maine. Photo credit: Robert F. Bukaty/AP/File
"When the river ice thaws, we are witnesses to a veritable celebration of ducks. It's as if all these different species have agreed to appear at precisely the same moment, their sole intention being to put on a fashion show of diverse colors and habits."
The ducks fly upriver a bit and then set themselves down where the current is the swiftest. Anton and I watch as they barrel along, shooting past us like contestants in a high-speed beauty contest. When they arrive where the water has calmed, they fly back to the rapids for another go.

Rubber Ducky Regatta
Reader's Digest listed the Cincinnati rubber ducks among the quirky, amazing and truly extraordinary in their Best of America issue. I couldn't agree more!!
(At left is a picture of tens of thousands of ducks being dumped in the river.)
I must start one of these in NYC. (As soon as they get rid of all the raw sewage that accidentally made its way into the Hudson.
More on the regatta.

Virginia Tech Gunman Liked Rubber Duckies!
Oh no! What does this mean? The Smoking Gun (ironic much?) found old eBay orders that Cho Seung-Hui placed in 2006. Apparently he bought about 37 ducks from the same (duck?) dealer.

The Cheeky Duck of New York Botanical Garden
From my good friend Carol:
Met this duck at the New York Botanical Garden Saturday. He was following his wife, then spotted me and walked right up, assuming incorrectly that I would feed him. When I showed no sign of tossing food his way, he turned tail(feathers) on me.
